Nice Surprise at the National Park Service gift shop

Updated: Apr 2, 2019

After spending 3 weeks in Colorado, we came back to the North Carolina Blue Ridge in mid October for the autumn leaves. Unfortunately the leaves are both late and the color is very muted compared to previous years.

My wife's brother and sister in law came to join us for a few days from the Atlanta area. We took some nice drives around the Boone and Blowing Rock area and stopped in at Cone Manor on the Parkway to look at the crafts and show them the grounds. While visiting the National Park Service gift shop, I started looking over the books, and sitting on a table, by itself, was a display of the new America's National Parks - A Photographic Journey. I immediately recognized the image on the front cover as one of mine. Turned the book over and they even had a nice acknowledgement on the back cover with my name.

I offer some of my images for sale through stock photo sites, like Adobe Stock. I never know who is purchasing an image, so I had no idea that a photo of mine had been selected by the publishers. Needless to say I was excited. Now I have my Mom's Christmas present already picked out.

The image is taken from the Flat Rock Overlook (Milepost 308.3). The stop is a few miles south of Grandfather Mountain on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The overlook is a fairly easy 5-10 minute hike from the parking area.
